Is Your Job F.F.F.™?

Almost 20 years ago, I wrote a book called, The Theatrical Juggernaut – The Psych of the Star (now in it’s 2nd edition).  It was the first book I ever wrote, and it’s hard to believe I wrote it back when I was 22!

In the book, I realized something financially about most wannabe professional actors: their “day job” source of income was not conducive to a traditional acting career because either it wasn’t fun, or it wasn’t flexible, or it wasn’t financially rewarding (F.F.F.™).

I realized that if you didn’t have all three of the F’s, you could not properly pursue your dream of becoming a professional actor!

Why couldn’t you pursue an acting career with a non-F.F.F.™ job?

Good question!  Here’s the answer:

  1. If your job wasn’t fun, you were drained after work and didn’t do the things you needed to do to promote your talent.
  2. If your job wasn’t flexible, you had to turn down all auditions or potential job opportunities.
  3. If your job wasn’t financially rewarding, you didn’t have the additional income to put into your career.

In either situation, if you lacked one of the three, you were not a happy camper!

In later years, I realized that this concept of F.F.F.™ doesn’t just apply to actors.  It applies to ANYONE who has a dream.  And heck, it just makes your life better in general!  Who wouldn’t want a job that was fun!  Flexible!  Financially Rewarding!  Right?

Whatever job you have now, ask yourself the three F.F.F.™ questions:

  1. Is my current job fun?  (Do I love getting up for work, going to work, doing the work, and thinking about the work?)
  2. Is my current job flexible?  (Can I take days off when I need them?  Can I go on vacation when I want?  Could I take an unpaid sabbatical if I needed to?)
  3. Is my current job financially rewarding?  (Can I pay all my bills with this job and have money left over to invest in myself?  Does this job’s income allow me to live far below my means?  Does this job’s income allow me to do the other things I want to do in life?)

If the answer to any of the three questions is NO, then good: you just figured out something really important: you need to make a change.  Either you need to turn your current job into an F.F.F.™ job, or you need to go out and find a new job that is F.F.F.™.

If your current job is F.F.F.™, then great news, right?!  But don’t get cocky: it could always take a turn for the boring, inflexible, and financially wanting.  So keep your eyes and ears open!  Look for signs that things are changing, and be sure to intervene before your awesome F.F.F.™ job turns into a B.I.F.™!  (You know: a boring, inflexible, and financially wanting job that you hate and that drains the life out of you without letting you have days off and that doesn’t even pay your bills!  Blech!)
